Whipple is a coal company mining town from the turn of the 20th century. Everything in the town was owned by the coal company that owned the mine where everyone worked. Workers were paid in script and could spend it on the company house (rent) or items bought in the company store. Workers were seldom left with anything left over to cash for real currency and spend elsewhere. Today, long after the mine has closed, it is simply a small hamlet in the New River Valley area.

We depict here some description and history boards as on display at the town's one intersection with a stop sign.
