Batalion Harr

Henry Batalion (Andrzejewski) and Irene Harr

in Northern Ohio during 1920's and later. Welcome Cousins!

Much of this history has been confirmed or filled in by their daughter Joyce

History

From the 1930 census, we know Henry was an Andrzejewski/Anderson and living in Cleveland with his step-father Joe Batalion and mother Helen. Helen remarried in 1922 when Henry was about 3 years old. See Andrzejewski Ruszczyk for more history on his parents and family. Irene was roughly the same age; born and raised in Cleveland as well but to Jesse Harr and Gladys Howard (see Harr Howard for more info) as confirmed by the 1930 census as well.

Although not formally adopted it appears, Henry used the Batalion name pretty much his whole life. He officially changed his name in 194x but long after getting married using the Batalion name. He appears to be the only one of the many kids of Helen and Stanislaw to have changed his name. But being the youngest, and very young when Joe Batalion became his step-father, this is understandable. Joe Batalion was the only father he ever knew.

Marriage

What we do know is they went to Ripley, NY to get married in 1936. Based on the history of the town and the young age of Henry and Irene at the time, we suspect they eloped. From the town's history page:

+Because a waiting period was not required in New York State to marry, Ripley was the scene of many, many marriages from the 1880's to 1945 making it known as the "Marriage Capital of the World". The Town Justice was on call day or night to perform wedding ceremonies.

Middle Years

We do not have much information from the depression through the war years for this young couple yet. We do know they waited 15 years before having children. According to Joyce, growing up during the depression and then war, they did not want to bring children into that environment.

Children and a move from Cleveland to Mentor

Joyce and Tim were born in Cleveland, Ohio. Irene and Henry were living at 8009 Korman at the time. Needing more space for their growing family they built a home in Mentor, Ohio and moved there in 1955 when Tim was just an infant.

Later Years

Henry died in 1990. Irene lived in the house for another ten years before she started needing additional care. She moved into an apartment by 2000 and with her son for awhile. But alzheimers and COPD got the best of her towards the end. She passed peacefully just into the new decade in January 2010.
