John/Johan Rogelj and Maria Udovich
in Slovenia and USA in mid to late 1800's. Welcome Cousins!
We are still struggling to find the parents and family here. The parents are mostly only mentioned in USA marriage and death records for their children that came here. The siblings all only mentioned together in daughter Mary Jeric's 1959 death notice. But then there is a Frank Rogelj living with Josephine Gliko in the 1910 census as well (no sibling Frank in Mary Jeric's death notice).
To date, we have expected autosomal DNA matching between Josephine Frost nee Gliko nee Rogelj and Anna Zele nee Kosak nee Rogelj's grandkids and great-grandkids. But no matches appearing with the Mary Jeric nee Rogelj group. They were a large enough family one would expect some to have tested by now. Util we find their origination village in Slovenia and then the Status Animarium page for the family, we are not likely going to sort this out.
Here is what we have now.
Tracking down their home village in Slovenia
Breakthrough in 2018 and now more recently reported in a detailed email to the list. For now, we simply reference it here: June 2018 and a recent update at Sep 2020Key is, especially with the recent find of the 1869 Census, and the ignoring the Slovenska Vas for Deutschdorf early mislead, we are pretty sure we have the village of our Rogelj's, Udovich and even Gliha — all right next to each other. And maybe Anton and Mary Rogelj are cousins from a slightly farther away village.
John Rogelj
John seemed to have come in the 1880's to America and worked in the mines or similar. He then must have gone back, sent his daughters Anna and Maria to Cleveland — at which point they both married within a month of arriving. So likely arranged ahead of time. Then returned himself a year later with daughter Josephine.Maria Udovich
All we have for Maria is a name so far. But we suspect more will come due to numerous autosomal DNA matches showing up. These matches are exclusive to a single surname immigrant from Slovenia back in the same time frame: Udovich. So working to see if a family can be developed (siblings) from the matches to then get a date and location for Maria.Children
The list of children is mainly from Mary Jeric nee Rogelj's death notice of 1959. Anna Rogelj's descendants knew that John was an Uncle as he and Mary were the godparents for many of them. But Mary "Mrs Jeric" Jeric nee Rogelj was always only thought of as a close, good family friend. We take it Mary was also a sibling both from her 1959 death notice and the ship arrival record of her and Anna together. But Mary is nine years older than Anna and 20 years older than John. On top of that, if we believe a birth year of 1854 for John, the father John is only 17 when Mary is born.See Kosak Rogelj, Jeric Rogelj and Glika Rogelj for more information on some of the kids.
