HP Elitebook 2560p

Details about HP Elitebook 2560p's bought as surplus from Kramden Institute:

Setups

Missing in both: battery, hard disk carrier, hard disk, AC charger/adapter
Included only single 4GB memory card (2 slots though) — bought one 8GB and put 2-4GB in one
WebLapServ 10.1.10.15 S/N:CNU2100RDD, Win7Pro HVY23-WGX6Y-3F7WY-C627Q-BCMDK (missing joystick) 8GB RAM
WebLapServ2 10.1.10.16 S/N:CNU2240305, Win7Pro H34DQ-YC832-33WVB=86306-V9QKJ (missing small cover on back) 2x4GB RAM

BIOS

BIOS is version F22 (older, more original, 12/22/2011). Back at start of UEFI capability. vF21 was first introduced to support Linux native (UEFI and Linux bootloader?)
BIOS vF63a is available to stabilize UEFI (10/27/2016). But from HP as executable (ZIP executable).
Will not recognize stick on its own to boot for BIOS upgrade (8GB was largest recognized and perusable)
Basically had to install Win10 (unregistered) on an internal hard disk to run the HP BIOS update executable.

Attempts to boot off USB stick

Boots Win10 off USB stick just fine. But will not recognize USB stick when rebooting to firmware to upgrade BIOS.
Will not Boot off of Debian Linux USB stick; will not recognize GRUB loader? Only tried 64GB USB stick though.

Boot process

<ESC> at power up to get menu
F9 to get boot device list including USB drives
F10 to get BIOS menu (but does not often work?)

Diskless boot

  • Network or diskless boot requires DHCP / DNS server to recognize devices and respond to inquiry for boot. Hence will need local router that is programmable to add this. DHCP / DNS then directs requesting device to file on network server (i.e. ReadyNAS box in our case).
