Slovenian Emigrants

This is a page to capture breakthroughs, often not yet incorporated into the main database, of our Slovenian Emigrants. Why special? Many here are 1/2 or more Slovenian. Emigrants are hard to track back in Slovenian due to (until mid-2021) the difficulty in accessing records. We have a similar page for Slovak Emigrants as many here also have ancestors from there.

To find the Emigrant in Slovenia, you need to know the village they came from. Sometimes listed explicitly on the passenger arrival list or Declaration of Intent for Naturalization. But all too often, simply the major administrative district is listed. So we spend many years trying to determine the village to then start the real discovery in records.

In some cases this is documenting that we have found the lines in Slovenia but not yet uploaded them. Other cases, it is to document the key contributors or collaborators that helped us get there. As that may get lost in the database entry and sourcing of data.

Jordan (Summers 2015-2016)

A large family with many immigrants born in Šentjernej and many still with us. It was more an issue of finding them in the church records and settling fuzzy recollections of 2 to 3 generations back. Some cousins never emigrated and assist in the process as well. Key is we rediscovered all the siblings and were able to rebuild the story; mostly due to Randy. This was the first family that Maria Velikonja did extensive archives work on in Slovenia — archdiocese for BMD records, parish church for Status Animarum, and additional land records office work as well as cemeteries. We have a separate family page on the parents and kids of the emigrants.

Košak (May 2018)

Long a mystery — especially with the origin village. Mostly because the main immigrant died young and never filed naturalization papers. No other relatives were known to emigrate. All we had was a birthdate and name to go by. It took many years to find a proper passenger list as it was incorrectly indexed and much earlier than expected (1887). The breakthrough came when Maria inquired about the village name in the likely passenger list in May 2018. Her inquiry to the Slovenian Genealogy 2000 Facebook group site yielded Joann Hanson Handly who had the Zagradec Status Animarum book that included that village of Malo Globoko. She later found he was actually born in Velike Rebrce but the family may have moved before he emigrated as his sister was married in Malo Globoko. We have a separate family page on the two parents who separately emigrated and married in Cleveland.

Baznik

Velikonja, Rus, Vovk (Summers 2015, 2016)

Collected by Maria as part of her other work on our common Jordan - Baznik lines. Simply documented here as completed by her but maybe not integrated into our database here.

Rogelj (Spring 2021)

Having struggled for years to find the likely village (records were incomplete or generalized),

Ban (Summer 2021)

Simply never at the point to start looking for these "in-laws", the break through finally came when Randy guided descendant Joe Cole to the Šentjernej parish church to look through their Status Animarum there. As this family married and started with kids in Sentjernej, it was just a matter of looking them up.
